Many climate-relevant behaviours are habitual. Habits memory-based propensities to respond automatically specific cues, acquired by repetition of in stable contexts. Socio-cognitive models widely used predict behaviours, but positing behaviour as intentional, provide a poor account habitual behaviours. While unsustainable habits barriers change, their very features (frequent, automatic and resistant change) also make them desirable for sustainable obtain. informational approaches generally ineffective breaking habits, legislation, incentives, ‘nudges’, implementation intentions, competitions, ‘moments change’ (e.g., moving house) more effective. Linking identity context can ensure new endure. Psychological theories policy efficacy be greatly improved attention habits.
